Clarke airs fears about fees impact
Article Abstract:
Education secretary Charles Clarke has admitted that he is concerned that his plans to charge students top-up fees of up to UKPd3,000/yr for university courses from 2006 could deter people from poorer backgrounds from applying for university. The government is holding talks with universities about student support as a result of these concerns. Vice-chancellors are believed to be keen to help the government as they believe that the top-up fees will boost the income for higher education, but they are concerned that the bill for any extra student support could be passed on to them, eating into the additional money generated by the new fees.
